Screen-free play ideas
Why make time for imaginative play?
A play mat gives a child a place to begin. The best part is what they decide happens next.

A small invitation to put the screen down
Some days, getting started is the hard part. Lay out a mat and a few cars, then ask one question: “Where is this driver going?” There is no script to follow and no score to beat.
Screen time is only one part of a child’s day. The World Health Organization encourages active play and limiting sedentary screen time for children under five. A mat can help make a screen-free play option easy to reach for; it is no substitute for outdoor movement or time together.
What children can practise through play
In free play, children can invent stories, try different ideas, use words to explain what they are doing and share decisions with another player. UNICEF describes play as supporting imagination, creativity, problem solving and social interaction. A play mat offers a setting for those activities; it cannot promise a particular developmental outcome for any child.
Three prompts for a new adventure
- Where are we going? Choose a destination and let the child decide the route.
- What happens on the way? A fallen tree, a delivery or a friend to collect can change the story.
- Who gets the next turn? Swap drivers and let the next player add their own idea.
Make play fit your family
Try ten minutes together, then leave the mat out if the child wants to keep going. Sometimes a child will play independently; other times they may want you to join. Follow their lead and keep the activity age appropriate.
