How to choose a toy car play mat

1. Start with the cars they use

Our artwork is designed with 1:64 scale toy cars in mind. Many Hot Wheels sized cars suit that kind of play, though sizes vary across toys. Read our guide to choosing a play mat for Hot Wheels sized cars. If they already love a set of cars, use those as your starting point.

2. Choose a story they will want to tell

Forest tracks invite off-road exploration. A city or village scene gives everyday journeys a setting. Rally and drift themes suit children who like corners and races. There is no single best theme; pick the world that suits their interests.

3. Measure the play space

Consider both the footprint of the mat and the space needed to sit and move around it. Check the dimensions listed for the exact design and size in the Contrado store before ordering.

4. Check the product listing

Materials, finish, care instructions, price, delivery estimates and returns can depend on the product and destination. The live Contrado listing is the source for these details.

5. Leave room for their imagination

Try a simple prompt: “Where is this car going?” A few cars, a route and an idea can be enough to begin. The child can make the story their own.
